When I was in Perth-Western Australia, I wrote a short essay about advantages and disadvantages of being away from home and studying in another country. All About Perth
I’m Indonesian. I came here to study in Perth, especially Canning College. My school in Indonesia, Magetan 1 Senior High School, gave me a chance to study new culture and knowledge in a different country. I get a lot of advantages from this program, but unfortunately I also meet disadvantages during study in Perth. Well, that is fair, because from everything that has happened to me during these last three months, I found a lot of new experiences and that’s very important for my future.
Study at Canning College is a really good choice, because I get uncountable advantages since the beginning I study here. First, I have new friends from different countries. All of them so kind to me, even though I’m a new student and the youngest among us . Second, it has professional teachers with wide variety of knowledge and good sense of humour. They do not make the student feel bored during the lessons. They have their own way and special technique to make us, their student; want to understand the subjects with our own will. For example, take us to watch the movie together. But still, the teacher choose education theme of course. And besides that, it gives the student good facilities such as comfortable library, large canteen, music room and prayer room. Oh, one more! They have an indoor basketball court and complete set of sport equipment. Yeah, this school has its own gymnasium. Anyway, everything I learn here is about new cultures and knowledge that I never knew and never felt before. If there are advantages, also there are disadvantages.
There are some disadvantages that I feel and find during my stay in Perth. The most painful feeling that I feel everyday is homesickness. I must get used to the new environment and new people in a short time.
It makes me always remember my family, my friends, and my hometown in Indonesia. I also find difficulties in language, because I don’t often speak English in my daily life before. And I should save my money too. Because my parents are far away from me, I could not buy anything I want. So, I need to be patient and endure my own desire. It gives a lot of new experiences.
When you go to a different place, you will get new experiences. And that is exactly what happened to me. The first time I came here, I met a lot of people from different countries. Most of them are Chinese and Indian. Some others came from Europe and other countries in Asia. Sometimes, they speak with their own language. Well, I don’t understand what they talk about of course. But still, they talk English mostly. And for me, it’s okay to speak with my own language such as Indonesian or Javanese, but the problem is, nobody understands that. Anyway, people over here do not really care about other person’s business. Actually, I like it. It makes me more confident, as long as it is good. The experience which I like the most is when Canning College went to Scientist Park to see a movie about ‘The Cosmic Collusion’. That’s really unforgettable.
In conclusion, study in Perth has given me courage to face my future and get ready for problems that I might have. With all of the new experiences and knowledge, does not matter with whatever disadvantage that I get, study in Perth is a really good chance in my life.
